Reading Endorsement

It is now possible to add a Reading Endorsement to any teaching certificate in Georgia. All courses for the Reading Endorsement must have been completed after July 1, 2000 when the endorsement went into effect! The Department of Reading Education has been approved by the state Professional Standards Commission to offer the Endorsement to any student completing the following 3 courses:

READ 6010 Foundations of Reading Instruction (online or on campus)
READ 6020 Children With Reading Problems (online or on campus)

and ONE of the following courses depending upon whether the Endorsement is sought respectively at the elementary, middle, or secondary school level:

READ 6420 Literacy Development and Instruction in Early Childhood (online or on campus)
READ 6070 Middle School Reading (online or on campus)
READ 6030 Teaching Reading in the Secondary School
READ 6060 Content Area Literacy (online or on campus)

It is anticipated that these three courses can be incorporated easily into programs of study in many degree/certification programs in education. That is, students could enroll in these particular reading courses to fulfill requirements (including electives) without taking more than the required number of courses in their individual degree/certification programs. For those not enrolled in degree programs but wanting courses for the reading endorsement, they can apply as non-degree students.

If you are interested in the endorsement, please consult first with your academic advisor or major professor about how these courses might fit into your program of study. Other questions about the endorsement or the courses can be directed to Ms. Becky Hendren, Degree Program Specialist, who will forward the question to the appropriate faculty member.
